Top 10 - Energy Efficient Remodeling

You already own your house and it was built back before people were really aware of “green” building practices (you and about 110 million close friends). With American’s spending over $200 billion dollars on home remodeling there are a lot of people out there making changes to their homes. If you are going to update your home, why not go green. Well, you ask, what are some of the best changes you can make to improve your home’s energy efficiency?

Tearing Down The House - Remodeling Versus Demolition

Most of our entries talk about building and new items, this one will take a bit different tact. The EPA says remodeling generates 136 million tons of waste annually. According to the Florida-based Deconstruction Institute, the destruction of buildings annually generates 125 million tons of debris. This makes up 20 percent of the waste in landfills.

Any way you look at it – this is a lot of material. What can we do about it?

The Top 10 List (No input from David Letterman)

The Partnership for Advancing Housing Technology (PATH) recently listed their top 10 technologies for improving homes and making them more energy efficient.

Among the items mentioned there were several that would be quick and easy for the average homeowner to implement . These include high efficiency toilets, compact fluorescent lighting and air sealing. In future posts we will delve deeper in these items and focus more on the time and effort required to implement these upgrades.
